Hi everyone. I'm wanting to get back in the show cattle business. My dad owns about 20 head and I'm wanting to start to AI and sell calves to help pay for veterinary school. I was wondering if there were any sales for bred heifers and cows with calves being due in the Spring? Thanks

I usually start my search at cwcattlesales.com because they have a lot of sales listed that are coming up. Mostly clubby, but some purebred stuff as well.
It might help if you specify which breed you're looking at getting, so the right people can make suggestions.

Thanks guys! Would it be better to buy a good bred cow or buy embryos to put in my commercial cows? I'm wanting to just sell the calves for $1500+. Our cows are pretty large framed, easy fleshing, Sim/Angus cows. I'm wanting to AI a Bojo cow, her daughter,  a driver x 258 cow with her calf. I also just bought a Built rite x WMW/heatwave heifer I want to AI next spring. She's got good depth and length of body but needs  touch more bone, hair, and smoother shoulder.  Any advice is appreciative. Just wanting to make a profit to pay off some vet school debt.

Honestly the most economical thing to do is talk to breeders who raise the kind of cattle you want to raise and sell and buy embryos or flushes on their donors if they are willing to do that. Then have a good purebred Angus or Sim bull to turn in to cover the cows and make either quality replacements or growthy calves to sell by weight. A good maternal sire could even produce some show calves out of your own cows.

That route is so much faster than trying to AI everything up to snuff.

With your experience as a Veterinarian I would become a cooperator herd for someone rather than try to raise  your own clubbys.  You won't get rich but you will have a guaranteed income with very little risk.  They send you the embryos and you put them in your cows and charge them a fee when you send back the ET calves in the fall.

After a few years try the clubby thing if want.  Dr. Mike Mimms is very successful at it.
