The Great Beyond  ~  R.E.M.

Try this;

"I picked up my bag, went lookin' for a place to hide..."

Okay, I'll give ya the whole verse...

I picked up my bag, went lookin for a place to hide,
When I saw Carmen and the devil, walkin side by side,
I said hey Carmen, would you like to go downtown,
She said I gotta go, but my friend can stick around...

Red, I'm thinking of a song with a very similiar line, but not exactly - so, when I try to think about yours, the other one overrides it every time...

This one came in 1978, and united two guys from Texas that were "left of center" for what was then Nashville. It was on their duet Album, named after themselves. This song was never released to mainstream radio, and is an ''album cut".

..power is as power does,
   but, power slips away.
   It's so easy to abuse.
   Who'd a thought them A-rabs
   could have bought the USA,
just to give it to the Jews?...

In a place you only dream of
Where your soul is always free
Silver stages, golden curtains
Filled my head, plain as can be
As a rainbow grew round the sun
All the stars I've love who died
Came from somewhere beyond the scene you see
These lovely people played just for me
Now if I let you see this place
Where stories all ring true
Will you let me past your face
To see what's really you
It's not for me I ask these questions
As though I were a king
For you have to love, believe and feel
Before the burst of tamborines take you there

Down, down. Down, down. The star is screaming.
Beneath the lies. Lie, lie. Tschay, tschay, tschay.

And it's all right baby, I'm in love with you,
And it's all right, I would never make you blue or try to play with you,
Well I don't ever want to spoil your party, babe,
Or tell you where to go or what to do,
Oh no, all I ever wanted to do was love you,
There may be hope you could love me too

Alright, I'll back up and give you the first verse...

I pulled into to Nazareth, I was feelin' 'bout half past dead,
Just need to find some place where I can lay my head,
Hey Mister can you tell me where a man might find a bed,
He just grinned, and shook my hand, and "No" was all he said...
