Even though she's a year old, I still wouldn't push the panic button just yet.  Some cattle are later maturing than others, so give her some time.  I've seen some heifers not show obvious signs of heat until they were 13-15 months.  On the other hand, we had a couple Tarentaise heifers actually gave birth @ 14-15 months (accident - got bred before weaning).  With all that said, unless you plan to use an extreme calving ease bull (such as a Lowline), I wouldn't breed her until she's a minimum of 14 months & I think that 15+ months is best.

That's a good response Knabe!  (clapping)

In theory, CAB can even be a "NO Angus program".  The only requirements are a black hide & the carcass has to fit the specs.  A fullblood Welsh Black could potentially be sold as certified Angus beef & even though it contains no Angus!!

How about that Gigalo Joe Maine Bull? I've heard good things.

And it only needs to be 51% black hide. A Holstein could make it if the carcass qualified.

I saw yesterday that Brad & Juli must have gotten Gig Joe leased to ABS. Congrats Nelson's, I guess the name didn't scare everyone. LOL.  Someone else PMed me this week and said that Joe will work on 1st calf heifers.

I'm going to use him on a Gold Club heifer this year. His EPD's are -0.6 for BW.

We are using him on several this year, I think he would be an excellent choice for your heifer and you would have a high % calf, if she were mine that's what I would do this time around.

I wouldn't be afraid of Mama's boy on her.  Ours came out fairly easy.  I'm going to use Joe on some cows, but all my heifers that aren't Money Man's are getting bred to Money man.  I don't think we have a bad one out of him.  Very easy calving and wow do they take off.

You have had experience with both of the bulls, which would you use, mammas boy or Gigalo joe??? which would be better for hair, bone, and soundness??

I'm not justme, but you are looking at 2 different types of bulls.
Mama's Boy is going to give you a Maintainer if it's a heifer, if it's a bull it can't be registered on the Maine side, not sure on the Simmi deal, little smaller framed more geared to the clubby deal.
Gigolo Joe or Money Man you'll get a registered purebred hiefer or bull, both are calving ease, I think you'll get a little more frame with Joe than the Money Man's.  Any of these bulls should work on your heifer, just depends what you are looking to improve on, or fix with the mating.

So joe or money man.... I cant decide, I havent been able to convince my self to use money man for some reason.  I dont think he would clean up her front much. So I am thinking Joe or Dirty Hairy  (just because of kanes heifer)
