Good deal.  Have you sprayed her with anything else?  Have you tried a practice run of fitting her?  There are plenty of sprays you can use to make the hair POP like what you are wanting to do.

Don't get discouraged if you really don't see it stand on end until after she is clipped for the show.  I understand you don't want to go clipping on her yourself if you don't feel comfortable, I learned to clip the hard way, and right before Fort Worth might not be the best time to learn those lessons.

Let me know if you have tried any sprays or adhesives to get the look you want.  With a lot of hair, you might not have it "popping" all the time, but when she is show ready she will be fine.

Try something like Zoom Bloom or Liniment Hair Stimulator on her before you blow her.  A good coat of either of those or your own mixture should give the hair that pop you are looking for.

Let us know if it works for you.

Good luck.

I wouldn't be using Liniment Hair Stimulator on a daily basis as it will burn the hair out pretty quickly. As far as zoom bloom, it doesn't really have its full effect unless you're using it on hair that isn't already falling over. Doing what SS95 said would be in your best interest. Heck, FW is still a month away, getting that heifer a fresh pop would be the best thing ever. If your parents and ag teacher dont agree then I would question what they know about a calf needing to be fresh. Not only is this hair long and flat, but it is also stale when it gets this long. Sorry but when it comes down to it, better management would have you clip it off giving her a fresher appearance.

that heifer is going to need more feed than hair. she looks pretty weak down in that stifle muscle for a shorty. Very weak. also is she bowlegged or does it just look it?

Just to clarify I DO NOT recommend using the products I suggested everyday, it seems that the clip job that I along with everyone else agree the heifer needs is not an option for the next few weeks, try a practice run of fitting her up as you would at the show, for practice or whatever you want to call it and then see if you can get the results you are looking for.

And to add to UC's post, I agree you need to lay it to that heifer over the next month hard as you can go to make her competitive at a show like FW.

Not to change the subject of your question, but what are you feeding her and how much?

the heifer is not bow legged . these are not the best pictures ever though .

we were feeding bull & heifer developer but not anymore , she would eat sometimes and not others . recently we are feeding showmaster its an acco feed and she will eat ever last bit i give her so she is finally putting on more weight .

-note all these pics are atleast a month old some are older .

and as to how much .. promise she is eating more than my cow calf pair does .

Hey I'm not judging you on your ability, I'm trying to help.  Which Showmaster are you feeding?  They have great feed that will add lbs.  No one is trying to knock your heifer, but to be competitive at Fort Worth she needs to gain 3-5 lbs/day from here on out.  You may be feeding her enough, just curious as to how much you are feeding her?

Just remember everyone on Steer Planet is here to help, may not always like what they have to say, but trust that some of these guys have been showing a long long time and know there stuff.

ok i am back lol i agree with 3d and undisputed. some feed wont hurt her. you may want to try to get some vitaferm sure champ in her and that can increase her gain and keep her on feed while she is in fortworth. and all of the other majors that you may be taking her too. and it will keep a bloom to her through thouse jacktpot shows as well. dont take it to heart. like 3d said. we dont have anything against you we are just putting our methods out there for your use

i would just like to say that if it wont "pop"  either one your blowing it wrong or two its too long and just like ss95 said you should knock it, just less than a inch. my black limi in east texas gets that treatment alot and its not like we get the best hair growing weather and she still has longer hair than yours.trust me it would be okay. personally i wouldnt do it myself considering u have a fitter of your own just as myself and there is nothing wrong with that but if your fitter knew a damn the best thing would be to knock it or you are just going to have to deal with flat lifeless hair because you could be blowing it right but either way if it is too heavy it will not hold.

If you don't trust yourself not to take too much off, put some long guards on your clippers. Not 1 inch long, like 3-4 inch guards or about 1/4 shorter than her hair is. By clipping in this manner, you give her more balance and uniformity. I clip mine out like this before a show, about two weeks. It makes them look "fresh". Revive is also a nice tool to make the hair pop. Mousse and final bloom seem to work pretty good for our calves also.

Is the Rasor family in question from WHR Shorthorns? If it is my calves are almost walking distance from his place and I have got to believe that they are for a trim job at some level. He has been helpful to me and I don't even have shorthorn blood in my cattle.

By no means did I mean to slick her - like SS said just a trim over her whole body would make her look fresher for the show. I know Sarge and he's a great guy - I'm sure he would give her a trim for you.

brush, brush, and then brush some more.

if you work the hair enough at home, then it will pop at a show.

trust me, i know it may seem like that hair will never stand  but it will if you brush it and train it at home.

here is what we do on all of our calves, it works wonders on calves getting worked with for the first few times as babies and on regrowth after we slicked a big calf for the summer.
rinse them or wash them like normal then brush the hair down to get out excess water. after that, brush all the hair on the body forward. i generally brush the legs a few different ways, normally forward, up, and then forward again. if you can brush them under fans until they are dry then it will make the hair pop quicker.

the hair likes to lay the way it dries. this is why cow licks are hard to get rid of. if it dries getting worked then it will pop.

i don't like using rice root brushes doing this because it makes the hair lay down too much. i prefer the plastic scrub brushes much more, they seem to break the hair clusters and let air in to help dry.

Ask Sarge if he has time to go over her once before he clips her for FT. Worth.  If he thinks she doesn't need it, then I probably wouldn't.  I'm plenty confident in what I can do with a calf, but Sarge has done a lot more winning than just about everyone thats posted on this thread combined...and then some.

Having said that, if she were my heifer, I'd go ahead and body clip her some.

You are putting too much stuff in her hair.  You have it too oily.  Use nothing but kleen sheen.  It'll pop when you get her clipped

COWgirls .. she is a march, so 9 months ?

& thanks all of you for your help and suggestions,

-but like OFS said Sarge & the Rasor family have dont their fair share of winning & have YEARS of expierence . they are the greatest ( :

-& chambero,
the only thing i use daily is 1/2 Kleen Sheen 1/2 Vinegar . on saturdays i sometimes use pink oil before going in ot the show ring ? but that is it .

-cbcfarms
so your saying just brush her the whole time she dries with fans on her and dont blow her ?

-cebwtx
