Thinking about doing some bulls of different breeds but still trying to keep the calf registered in one or more associations.    How do the different associations work?

I know  Hereford & Angus are closed so the only way to get a registered Hereford or Angus calf is for it to have both parents registered.

Simmental - 1 registered parent = 1/2 simmi and is registerable.

What about Maines?  Shorthorns?  How low can the percentages go?

Are Red Angus & Charolais closed registrys?

Any other breeds?

I've just dealt w/ the Maines & Shorthorns.
The Maines very helpful & nice. Turn around time is about 2 weeks for papers. Cattle can be as low as 25%.

I've heard horror stories about the Shorthorns. Not sure if it's any better.

Just once worked w/ the Chi's to get papers from someone else. They were very nice. I think Chi's can be as low as 1/16 but don't quote me.

You can register charolais down to 1/2.
Im pretty sure on Chi's that if either parent was registered chi that the resulting calf can also be registered. In other words it can get pretty low when your not breeding any more chi in but they are still getting registered.

so as a goal, what would maine's have to do to quadriple their registrations, ie, get new customers.  this would still fall short of hereford's and be around simmental's.  interesting that charolais are more than herefords.  so was angus's increase at the sole expense of hereford's?

perhaps jill's link below answers the question.

Here is the chart for Maines-Cows, Bulls and Steers all have different rules

You can register your dog as a Chi if you want to...
