what are some of the best matings of all time for show heifers (including the cow).

the bulls get all the pub, but we haven't ever had a post about legendary cows.  pics, stories welcome.

criteria for best not limited to.

had a reasonable show career, or not, but made up for it with
at least reproduced themselves
had more than one producer and not necessarily a show animal
addressed a fault and passed it on and that list could include but not limited to
  teat size
  hock set (a variety here)
  optimum break behind the shoulders
  bag leveler
  performance
  antagonistic traits, ie maternal/perf

any criteria that generates a story

i'm not sure about all the qualities fitting the criteria, but i've heard from just about everyone that Pebbles was a very solid cow that produced a couple ai sires. i would think she was pretty good if she sold for100,000.

knabe - Since you've given me the opportunity to toot my horn, I'll start honking.

I'll nominate our pride and joy, Kalli -  #231747  Purebred, Polled, Maine-Anjou,Sired by Polleroid.  Her Dam was sired by FR Magic.  Maternal Grand Sire was AA Black Gold.  You can read about her Show Record, and see pictures at:  http://www.clubcalves.com/asklundcalli.htm
For you first timers, please read the HISTORY on our website http://www.clubcalves.com/asklundhistory.htm

Kalli's Dam - # 179566 Magic Kayla pictured as the Ch. MA at the Oklahoma Pot-O-Gold, 1994.  She was frame scored 2 months earlier at the JR Nat'l Show in Peoria, IL - 8.0
She also produced a Polleroid bull(full brother to Kalli) that I traded for 40 straws of Meyer 734.
Top picture.  I couldn't separate.

I hesitate responding to this thread about legendary cows and tooting my own donors horn; But being a little prejudice but our GVC Whitney has done very well for myself and my other 3 parnters as well as
for people who have bought her offspring.  Whitney was raised by Green Valley and sold as an open heifer on their sale for around a $ 1,000.  Her first 3 calves were bulls and they as well as 2 others were promoted.  She has generated in excess of $ 200,000 of gross revenue not including that her daughters have generated close to a $ 100,000 gross themselves.  She has had 2 sons that were Supreme Champion Bulls at the Nebraska Cattlemans Classic including the Last bull pictured a Whiskey son that won this year.

A Jazz daughter that we raised was the dam of the Lot 24 heifer on the Hartmann sale this last winter that brought $ 75,000, Jessica the Strictly Business daughter that I own had Dr. Business and a 3rd donor an Ice Pick has had 2 daughters that have averaged in excess of $ 5,000.

Pictured below is Whitney and 4 sons.  Ice Chest, Smokerings, Headliner a Jazz son used in Ohio  and the last being Soldier Boy the Whiskey that won this years Classic.

Picture 2- Dr. Business picture as a calf last fall
Picture 3- Valorie the Lot 24 heifer from the Last Hartman sale sired by Statesman and out of a Jazz Daughter of Whitney.

Whatever happened to Ice Chest?  We used him a couple of times when he first came out and then he just kind of fell off the radar.

[/quoteHad some real good ones along the way including Open Bar but his demand dropped quickly once his PHA status came out.

I'm sure quite few of the Shorty lovers might at least consider GF Miss Myrtle Bo 305 as a possible "Legend".  I know Malinda, Sullivan's, etc. have sure had some good ones out of her.  WE hope her daughter CVF Homedale Myrtle Bo becomes half as prolific.  I'm happy to report it looks like she's got  a good start!!

With out a doubt in the Shorthorn breed there are a few that come to mind for me in my middle aged life. Greenridge Robin R180,AF Shannon Margie and of course KA BA Rose T90. My young Mr. Olsen I will grant you Nick is a very sharp and wise man and has worked magic with the great beast. BUT let us not forget were she came from, that man bred some great ones ahead of there time. In the clubby calf world it is hands down a tap out contest for all the rest against the great 602 cow family.

The above expressed views and comments are just that, fun comments!!!!

Jeff, You beat me to it. R180, Shannon Margie, Rose T90( couldn't agree more on them) , along with Rodeo Casino 100 & Cumberland 410. You might even want to add Lucky Charm & Nobodys Fool.

She is definately on of the elite.  Diesel is another son.  There was also a Bold Statement/Harietta son that sold for quite a bit of money at the Classic this year that was competing agiainst the Whiskey/Whitney bull in the Supreme this last February.

As someone that used to be involved in the Angus Breed,  You have to bring up the Sitz Everelda Intense 1137 Cow.  Also
Ohlde's Dixie of Erica 1019 is another very influental cow, maybe my favorite!

How bout the Cumberland's? Mona Lisa?  There are a bunch of really good shorthorn cow families that can do it in the ring and in the pasture it seems like.

Several people mention some of the real popular, and rightly so, modern shorthorn cow families and I have no argument. However, I would think special consideration would have to go to the cows that did their damage without the benefit of Embryo transfer. In any flush of a great cow it seems there are some also rans to go with the ones that are selected to start the Sullivan or Cates sale. For shorthorns I would throw the horns of Deerpark Tulip 5th (I think 5th) owned by old Warren Oetken. She was the mother of Leggs (no intro needed) Len Ru Ta Leader (who was probably a better bull than Leggs and had a thing or two to do with T90 and so many other Kaba cows being lights out) as well as a very under utilized bull called High Octane.

Upon rereading my post I realize I missed the point of the question that was originally posted. As far as true matriarchs that put someone on the map or essentially started a prominent cow family, T90 would get my vote but runner up would be the Lucky Charm cow. Or Lucky Charm's mother however you want to look at it. Ever heard of a Lucky Charm before THE Lucky Charm? Me either. But I do know the Nollswood herd and Lehmans were doing it right for many many moons before that cow family seemed to make everyone stand up and notice.
