Several of you have asked about some of our calves so  I thought I'd put a couple of pictures on from our local fair.    The pictures aren't the best but they should serve to update some of you on the progress of some of our stock.

Sorry I didn't include that.  The CharX was Reserve Champion Market Hfr and 4th Overall Market Animal even thought we fed her as a breeding heifer.  The Shorthorn was the Champion Breeding Heifer and the black heifer won her breeding heifer class.  We probably should have shown the Char as a breeding heifer and the black as a market but because of the weights of the three heifers they would have been showing against each other.    We also had the Reserve Champion cow/calf, male prospect, and female prospect entries.
Not quite up to our hight water mark of five Champions in 2008 but all of these entries were born at Oakbar Ranch except for the CharX so still very satisfying.  We have a very competitive local show here with animals involved who have gone on to win State Fair titles in Iowa and MN as well as doing very well on the national level in breed shows.  This year's champion prospect female was named the Reserve Champion in her division at the Maine Junior Nationals the week before our fair.

I'll post pictures of our Reserve Champion Prospect male and female when I get back to my office computer.

Nice heifers, congratulations. Just curious what weight the Grand and Reserve Champion Market Steers are coming in weighing at all the county shows?

Our top five market animals were all in the 1230 to 1330 range.

The two calves below are the Who Made Who heifer and the Tonic bull calf that were Reserve Champions at our Junior Show

Thanks for all the positive comments!!  We won't be showing in the Open Shorthorn show at the Iowa State Fair this year due to scheduling problems but we will have some really good calves for sale--especially if you are looking for a Shorthorn bull calf or Shorthorn Plus steer. The Tonic calf pictured is structurally very sound and extremely growthy (his full brother hit 800 lbs at 205 days last year).  He should be an excellent bull prospect for anyone.  We also have a TM Gus bull calf out of our Trump show heifer from last year.  He got kind of a slow start(his mother tried to be the nursemaid for every calf in the pasture) but he's weaned and eating grain now so he is really starting to come on.  We also have a smaller framed Money Man steer out of our Vegas show heifer that is really hairy, square made, and has a really eye catching color pattern.  He'd be great for 4-H shows, etc.  In fact, my grandnephew just showed him in the Bucket/Bottle class at our fair.  He's pictured below.

We are also considering selling the Who Made Who heifer --she's got a really sweet disposition and just loves all the fuss associated with showing.  I have to admit, she will be the hardest for my daughter to part with, though!!

Thanks!!  Yes, I think the Who heifer has a beautiful neck and front end.  If she deepens down some(being a Who, I'm pretty sure she will) she could be pretty darn good by fall!!  I really like her fluid movement--kind of reminds me of how a true pleasure horse moves--effortless and easy.  To me, the true test of structure is how well they move without a lot of hoof trimming etc.  Her mother has probably the best movement of any of our cows and she sure passed it along to this heifer.
