Wow what a nice set of calves at the Stephenville show this past weekend!  Just was wondering if anyone knows what ages most of those calves were?  Plus think some of them may have stretched perhaps the weight on the calves too!  They seemed so fat and already finished was wondering how in the world they would make it to Ft Worth, SA, or Houston next year.  Or are most of them for summer and Fall shows?
We've been feeding our calves about 5 lbs of feed 2x a day now they weigh mid 700s, (plus some high quality coastal) but were pretty slim considering some of those calves.  Can anyone please tell me what they feed EXACTLY (starting now and going up to the majors) to get them to looking like that without getting too fat come the Texas majors?  We have great calves, but need more advise on the feeding.
Talk about some beautiful clip jobs!  We definitely need to go to that clipping clinic, does anyone know if theres one coming to Texas soon?
Tough year, but learning everyday!! Thanks Ya'll!!

Give me a call sometime and we can talk.  Don't be discouraged - Stephenville is real tough.

I talked to a buddy today who went and fitted at that show.  He said there were some phenomenal steers down there at that show.  I wouldn't be ashamed to take a whipping at one of those shows.  It's all about experience at this point.  My whipping will come May 2nd, when I take my daughter to Claremore, OK for her first show.  I'm sure we'll be thrashed as well, but they let you show in 4 rings & she needs the ring time.  We're gonna go have a good time.  BTW, my buddy (a bonafide steer jock) said the grand steer at that show was unbelievable.  Keep your head up & your spirits high, it gets better from here on out.

I took a first time shower, who happens to be my neighbor's son, to Stephenville last weekend.  He'd been looking forward to it for several weeks.  It was amusing to see his expressions when we got there and he saw the nice trailers, tents, countless good, good steers.  He'd never been around this "atmosphere" before and was like a kid in a candy store, specially at Sullivan's trailer.  We accomplished our goal: get him and his 2 steers out and around people, calves, noise, etc. and get him in the show ring for the first time.  His Angus was 1st in light wt. and yes, he was next to the lightest one in the Angus class, won first and he got to go back in and show for breed champ.  He stood last in the Hereford class - and let me stop right there and say that there were 3 of the best horned hereford steers I've seen in quite a while in his class and we've looked at a lot of Herefords this year in search of one for him.  Tell you what, Fort Worth is gonna have another amazing Hereford show next year.  Back to my point, calves got to get out among 'em, he got to be in this new venue he's anxiously been waiting for and I got to see a kid's eyes light up and most of all have fun and riding home in the pickup after the show his words were, "when is the next show we can go to?"  There were lots of really good steers there and I'm sure lots of good kids too but this young man had a good, good day with a 1st and last place calf - BTW, since my kids are grown and haven't shown for 5 or 6 years, I had fun too.
