But for a calf I'm desperately trying to get sold cause I'm tired of spending money feeding him and he's just too good to send to the feedlot - its pretty much free!

And that's the way it usually works for almost everyone.
Seriously, you should take that into consideration when buying calves as to whether they are broke or not. You can't quantify what its worth, but personally I'd a whole lot rather spend $1500 on a halter broken calf than $1000 for one that it isn't. That eliminates a lot of uncertainty/risk and makes it a lot easier on your kids.
