They are so pretty! I love belted cattle. I tried to buy one once but the guy refused to sell any of his cattle.

Excellent cattle!  (thumbsup)

The Big Show / Re: College Majors???
« on: November 03, 2011, 06:04:19 PM »
I am an agribusiness major with an emphasis in animal science. I have really enjoyed all of my agriculture classes. Actually the only classes I've taken for this major have been chemistry and accounting but I made it though them. I am graduating this December and have really enjoyed my college experience. However, there are no real good jobs (where I live anyway). A lot of the recent graduates are working on possessions with an agribusiness: animal science that they probably could have got without going to college. I don't think it's the major-- it's just that nobody is hiring right now! I don't want to scare you- it's just how things are right now. But if you love animal science as much as I do, I would encourage you to go for. That's just my advice. Good luck in the future!

The Big Show / Re: Lutalyse failed- anyone else have a similar story?
« on: September 28, 2011, 07:58:42 PM »
We had a similar situation recently. The bull jumped in with the heifers. I didn't see him breed anything but I lutalysed the heifers just to be safe. One of the heifers ended up with a baby calf 9 months later. She had it alright though so it wasn't so bad.. that's the bull she was going to be bred to anyway! Just had her first calf a little young! I still don't know why the lutalyse didn't work though!

The Big Show / Re: EPD's
« on: September 12, 2011, 05:28:33 PM »
I agree with twistedhshowstock.

A way to get a good idea of birthweight or calving ease EPDs for breeding heifers is to look at programs that sell bred replacement heifers. I like the Show-Me Select Sale standards, personally.
Listed by breed about 3/4th's of the way down the page. For example, if you wanted to breed a heifer to an angus bull, it is a good idea to get one with a CE EPD of 7 or higher.

I hope this helps you! :)

In my experience, the nicer calves take just as long as the wilder calves to halter break. I like to work with them at least 3 months before I take them anywhere. Good luck with her though- who knows, she might be really easy to break.  (thumbsup)

The Big Show / Re: Is attitude heritable?

It's genetic and environmental. Cattle can be DNA tested for docility but it also depends on the way they were raised (if a baby calf sees people all the time, it will be calmer around people as an adult).

Sounds like we were lucky here in SE Missouri! It snowed but it didn't stick. It is windy and cold though!

DNA testing for traits such as ADG, tenderness, yield grade, marbling, REA, longevity, docility, etc.

I use the Olive Oil Spray. It's in a green can.

If they give money to the HSUS, I will no longer buy any of their products. Remember that Pepsico also owns Frito-Lay.

1.) Simmental
2.) Angus
3.) Gelbvieh
4.) Charolais
5.) Maine Anjou

I like like limousines and salers but I can only chose 5.

But simmental is my most favorite. :)
