What is everyones take on the new ads Angus is putting out saying there is no need to cross breed anymore?

I saw the ad in Working Ranch magazine and could not find it on the internet but here is a link to the research paper on the Angus website

Just a good way to market Angus cattle. The breed has been ahead of others in promotion for years. From the elephant ads of the 70's...? to CAB and now these complain all you want the breed is just marketing better than the others.

I have a purebred angus cow, I have angus cross cows. I have other breeds, some purebred and some cross. Do I feel the angus are the best breed, superior, not even close, but I do feel they have Marketing Genesis. Look what they did with CAB.

It's such an interesting topic, it is preference but I see all these people who own similes or limos etc that say angus aren't closed to being superior well than why is it that a lot of breeds have used angus to make there breed better, you can't cross a lion and a zebra and not have strips

First of all, what the h is a simile?  (lol)
Second of all, I know there have been several people in my area that think that there is no need for any other breed besides angus.  There were more people that thought that very same thing even five years ago than there are today but many have gotten their commercial cowherds even more pure angus since then and have witnessed the negative side-effects of a purebred angus commercial cowherd.  Namely, lighter weaning weights, decreased vigor and will to survive at birth, increased rate of calf beater heifers(I have never seen a heifer beat her calf that was not at least a high percentage angus).  I also think it is a pile of crap to tell a commercial cowman that he is going to sacrifice carcass quality by breeding his angus based cows to a non-angus bull- it's simply not true.  In terms of docility, consistent growth performance, yield, cow longevity and overall profitability, I think it is really tough to beat top-end crossbred cattle consisting of a variety of different breed compositions(I am not here to blow the horn of any particular non-angus breed as there are MANY out there that have traits to offer the commercial angus sired female). <cowboy>

That's a crock angus cows are known for their mothering ability, longevity great udders easy doing, cal Ed come light hit the ground get up and suck within 30 mins. My jan calves come off the ow in July avg 700 pounds no creep, and they are getting heavier every year, angus have great marbling and carcass traits. Angus are the most influential breed and numbers continue to sore, and will only get more and more popular. When a childish born know a days there first 3 words are mom dad and ANGUS

A lot of breeds used angus to make them black to cash in on the CAB dollars. They did not use them to make their breeds "better".

The reason they can claim carcass quality is because our system is broken. Heavy muscled cattle actually get discounted, good marketers yes but at sometime the bad structure and terminal females will catch up with them.

The amount of feed required per unit of retail beef produced is the ultimate biological measure of beef production efficiency. Limousin calves produced the same amount of trimmed retail product with roughly one-half as much feed weaning to harvest as compared to Angus and Hereford calves.”

Your telling me that in an era of seven dollar corn, the breed that in tests has shown to have the highest conversion, and dress very high percentages won't exist?  Not likely.

There will always be commercial cattlemen wanting limi bulls.

Fullblood Limos will makes a resurgence before the purebreds.    Their days on feed is and always has been a problem.

The heavier muscled should be discounted as is generally considerably less marbled.  Do you want 3lbs of rump roast for dinner Or a choice filet?   Those terminal in type females, I agree, will come back to bite em.

I guess our" terminal type females". Don't know they are terminal......  We have several cows twelve or older, we had to lease a bull last year, first non-limi bull on the place in a while......  A fourteen year old purebred cow had a 125 pound calf unassisted.    Iowa beef expo limi sale has no trouble having a sale.    Calf buyers ask us when we are selling our calves and keep buying them year after year.  That heavier muscled also gives larger rib eyes, and as for taste, we sell as many locker calves as we have to offer every year to people that keep coming back.....  True in the land of show steers, limis are not the extreme type that win steer shows, and don't attract steer jocks.  IMO that is what will save the breed.    You might should look at the breed again with commercial producers in mind.    If noting else, limi bulls are great crosses for English bred females.

Show are for fun, we are talking beef production here.  The sales and expos for commercial cattlemen I see are doing just fine.

That being said, I think Angus bring a lot of good qualities to the table and I am not bashing them as a breed,  They have some marketing geniuses on their side.  I'm from the camp that variety is the spice of life and I think we are missing the forrest for the trees as we move to a straight bred cowherd.

Most breeds have good things to offer, but some of you are painfully jealous of Angus.  All of the British breeds will be more preferred in the commercial side in an era of high feed and drought.

Limis arent even in the conversation for the majority of commercial outfits - the true red limis are way too ornery and spooky to put up with.  You can get the same muscle from Simis or Charolais without the attitude.

Not an issue anymore... we run both angus and limis and there is no difference in disposition

Like I said, you need to take another look at the breed if you think disposition is still an issue.  Several of our cows will eat out of my five year olds hand, and she can lead our bull......  Our herd is not an exception.
