the last cowboy at pine creek ranch

“Cattle are not a cleft hooved animal and compact the soil unlike our native species.” I think he is confusing cattle with the true parasite of the west...the wild horse. How do you reason with people who are so uneducated on a topic they claim they are so passionate about and whether they know...

    Docilty scores

Have had quite a few Style/Maine and Style/Limi calves and haven't had one I couldn't break but they are consistently the last to give up and take a little more tlc. I used Insight for that very reason this year. His DOC epd is quite a bit better. Did end up using some Primo as well but almost...

    Maine Anjou

If you are breeding angus based cows I'd stick with purebred sons of GVC Suh, NAGE Ante UP or any of the TLM bulls.  My X/X2 calves have had plenty of performance as well.  The calves should grow well and I wouldn't be afraid of keeping the heifers out of them.  I should add that none of them...

    Conventional vs. Ivf flushing

If you are using sexed semen I would go conventional.  IVF is either a home run or really bad in my experience and quite a bit more expensive.  You should get more embryos going conventional with slightly better conception rates and less cost.

    Silveras Style heifer

My friend had one out of a registered angus cow with socks on its hind legs, he will throw white.  I've also seen one out of a maine cow with 4 white socks and a white belly

    Best way to Sell Bulls

In my opinion that set of bulls will be a hard sell, trust me I've tried to sell bulls like that and if they are not promotional quality you might be looking at $1500, if you are lucky.  Your market would be to fellow show calf breeders and guys just looking to get a few cows bred. There is a...

    jose vs daddys money

A pet peeve of mine is Maine = Clubby, sorry about that.  Good point about the hybrid vigor in the birthweights,  I still would not worry about using those bulls on heifers, if she can't have an 80 to 85lb calf unassisted as a heifer she has pelvic issues or is too fat.  I would be willing to...

    jose vs daddys money

Jose is a purebred Maine and Daddy's Money is a 3/4 blood. You can look up extended pedigrees on the Maine website, both have excellent ced and bw epd's.  I would not call them crossed up mongrels.

Something Different - Limousin Show Heifer

I'd like to see pics of the Architect calves, I have two heifer calves so far, one out of a Windfall cow that looks really nice and the other one is out of a Goal Line cow and she closely resembles a white tail fawn minus the spots.  Both were 85lbs or less.  I'll try to remember to take some...

    Conception Rates for TAI

The Cattle Visions app for my iPhone is very handy.  It has the 7 day protocol I use in calculator form and I have had over 80% conception rate the past few years with TAI.  Follow the directions down to the hour, I think that is very important. The cows need to be in good enough shape and far...

    Dose creep feeding pay

Adding to that...calves wean easier and don't go backwards, fewer sick calves at weaning. On the other side its labor and added expense.  Each operation needs to weigh the pros and cons, so I would say it depends on your goals.

    Prospect calves

My family has shown prospect calves at the MN State Fair a few times and I think a #450 calf is about the average.  There will be 300-600lb calves there with birthdates ranging from Feb to April

    can't register calves

I bred a couple purebred Maines to a purebred Sim bull last year and had no trouble dual registering them as half bloods in each association.  You won't get the 3/4 blood papers like you wanted but I don't see why you cannot get halfblood papers by calling the cow a commercial.  Maybe I am...

    Calves got Switched Problem

Had this happen yesterday, two cows calved right next to each other and each wanted to claim both calves, I think we got the right calf with the right cow but who knows for sure.  One was bred for power and the other calving ease so the smaller one went with the calving ease cow.

    HELP!?

Limousin, long and slinky when they are born and they will get up and suck, they grow into their hip and muscle. How long are you letting these cows try to have that calf?  They should sneeze out a 70lb calf, if I was to guess you are jumping the gun with pulling some of them.

    Sale of calf and registration.

I'm not taking your buyers side because he's an a-hole but... If you are a breeder you pay membership dues every year and once their check clears I transfer papers, even if they say they don't need them, they can throw them away if they want.  It's good customer service and cheap insurance...

    Hard Whiskey ?

I'll bite on this one.  I have two of them about three weeks old,  one out of a 3/4 blood Maine that Iwill have to eat.  A heifer, probably smooth polled, born at 95lbs, very straight off both ends and very hard looking.  The cow has no clubby bulls in her pedigree and is very soft, moderate and...

how many are open after stalks??

We have 1-3% that are confirmed pregnant every year that do not calve or abort.  I think that is about average, could be just bad luck last year, if it gets worse or is consistently above 5% I would be looking for the problem.  Are they palpated or ultrasounded?  An inexperienced vet has...

To induce or not to induce.....

Let nature take its course, our Limousin are always 10 days overdue.  We DNA a couple every year because they are 15 days past AI but look like an AI sired calf.  Start messing with nature and problems occur. Just make sure momma dries the calf off and it gets some colostrum to keep it warm.  We...

Looking for a red or red carrier Purebred Maine bull

I was away from a computer for the past couple days.  Thanks for all the replies and messages,  I have a lot more options than I thought out there. Oakview, it is kind of ironic that there are not many reds left in a red breed.
