    internal marbling

Several years ago work was done at U of Illinois and U of Neb dealing with enhancing marbling. The gist was starch (i.e. corn) at around 100 days of age could greatily increase the amount of marbling at typical slaughter wts.  That was for feedlot cattle. They were getting old line, yellow hi %...

Bushs Unbelievalble and First Impression Calves

I've seen and had a handful of the unbelieveable calves.  They are came easy (mostly out of hfrs) and looked a little ratty at first.  But the older they get the more excited I get about them. Ive seen them out of Angus, Maines, and Sim.  I like them well enough Im flushing a PB Simm cow to him...

    Free choicing Silage

Even with kernal processed C.S., it is a "roughage"- plenty of fiber. So, with the CS and the haylage, you have a very high amount of fiber in the diet. (plus the fact that both are, I assume, 60%+- H2O) You are feeding only about 5# grain/hd/day.  Give them all the silage they can eat. They are...

    Free choicing Silage

Is this corn siage? Or oat silage, hay silage?  Irregardless you should probably do the TMR deal.  Silage is great for putting on the proverbial big belly. The more the merrier, generally speaking. Silage, if made properly, will not create acidosis. It will help create a stable rumen environment...

    Square over rump?

Years ago there was a Dr. Jan Bonsma from S Africa who did a bunch of work on phenotype and its relationship to economically important traits.  I think he addressed this issue.

    Calling all Midwest Feeders

Are you still looking?  I am aware of a guy (good caretaker) that has plenty of extra feed.  E. IA.  looking for something along these lines.  We have been hot, but blessed with enough rain (and feed).  If you are interested I'll get you two talking.  TJR

rock salt - capitalism - disgust

xxcc - Sounds like you should invest in a salt mine.  Then you can feed salt any way you want. (or buy it any way you want)

Am I seeing things or not?

My comment on beta-agonist deals with (I believe) their effect on tenderness of beef.  The line that the manufacturers use is that beta-agonists do have a detectable, yet "not statistically significant" effect on tenderness and consumer acceptance.  Beta-agonists do have a great effect on lean...

Am I seeing things or not?

In regards to quality of eating experience, the packing companies are encouraging cattle feeders to use the beta-agonists prior to slaughter.  This surely does not enhance the tenderness of the meat.

    Maine Anjou------What's up?

Who is this "packer" that docks everything over 1320#?  I don't know of any packer(that I'm familiar with) that will dock cattle at that weight.  The standard for several years has been 1000# carcasses, which equates back to around 1500-1550 live weight.  With feed costs where they are at today...

what's the word on "WLTR RENEGADE 40U"

Yup, he's a pretty darned good bull.  Frame size- just guessing a middle 5, long bodied, good fronted, good hip, sound moving, long stride,  he won KC also.
