you know.. in another life; if every thing was gone, and I could go back in time.. I'd consider this...  seriously.. I always wonder, what if I'd a done that..

Looking back at some old semen catalogs the other day, I had all kinds of crazy shit marked as prospects to buy.. and HW might have been one of them...

I'm thinking about it:  Seriously though--  wouldn't that LOWER the value of my cowherd.. shorthorns aren't worth much.. but aren't they worth more than narrow pelvic, hard calving, piss poor milking heifers?

haul them to the stock yard, take whatever you get and invest that money in proven 4-5 yr old cows of your choice breed and standards and start building, within 5-7 years, keeping back all the heifers you have, you can have a nice size herd of cows that make you happy and hopefully make you money <cowboy>

I can confidently say that if I were starting over again today (been out of the business for 5 years)I would want the same five high percentage Maine-Anjou cows, and the four double registered Maine/Simmi cows that I sold.  I truly believe I could easily combine a few of these newer genetics with those from 15- 20 years ago and produce some mighty nice Show Heifers and Breeding Bulls.  I also would keep doing it the old fashioned way, AIing without sync, and no flush/embryo work.  As our family learned many years ago, KISS (keep it simple stupid) is most often the most effective process.

I would look back on my Shorthorns and say "what a ride, been there done that". I would not replace them. I would go straight to Kansas and put together the same Red Angus genetics I started working with building my cows as I did two years ago. I would go to my insurance
man and he would pay me more for my Red Angus than my Horns just like the sale barn does!!!H
Why do you still have "Shorthorns" on your business signage if they are so god-awful?  Why not just go to "Cornell Red Angus" and leave it alone? Just a thought

I do not hate my Shorthorns at all. Actually just the opposite. They have been good to me. I have never been in a different breed. I just see more financial opportunity for me in my area with the Reds. I have sold some very successful females in the Shorthorns. It has just gotten to a point where it is a high dollar game in our state and surrounding states within the Shorthorns. I still have a couple of powerhouse shorthorn cows that I am gearing them for the steer deal. It was a what if question! Trying to find horn cows bred like mine in pedigree would be no easy task to replace. I'm just down on numbers not out. I like kickin ass oncein a great  while as the under dog that sells them cheap to get kids started. We sold an $800 horn heifer in OK has been grand once res grand once and breed champ once.We sold $900
Plus heifer to OK that has been grand once and won her class at Kansas City. I not out yet!!!! I'm just gettin started!!!
