    Herd Bull Pictures

Mostly due to my photo skills.  When he's  haired up in winter, he's definitely a deep, rich red.  We have seen this with other cattle we bring from Canada and the upper Midwest when they shed in summer.

    Herd Bull Pictures

Not the best pic, but we're reai excited about what this bull can do.  Very unique pedigree and proven performance, we think he'll add something to our genetic base. https://shorthorn.digitalbeef.com/modules.php?op=modload&name=_animal&file=_animal&animal_registration=4224925

    Newbie Looking to get started

While the numbers of Shorthorns in Alabama aren't extremely large, there is a solid core of breeders and young people showing them.  If that's the route you want to go, I would agree that selecting for a more maternal, commercially acceptable type would be your best bet.  We've sold cattle into...

    Waukaru Sale

Does anyone have a sale summary from Waukaru's sale this past weekend.  I looked on Live Auctions and they don't have it up. Thanks!

We are changing our herd away from Shorthorn

For many of us in the Southeastern US there has been a long standing bias against Shorthorns and that has often been reflected in the market, so I fully understand where you're coming from in your thoughts.  But let me offer one thought that we've found to be true over the years and it's...

    ? for the Shorthorn Experts.

Ryan, To some degree their weight would depend on how they were fed and managed.  I was part of a USDA project that proved that across type (frame and muscle) feeding and management was responsible for more than 50% of the outcome.  By manipulation of feeding time and energy level we could...

    ? for the Shorthorn Experts.

Nate, A large part of the basic answer is the fact that the Angus breed has a broader gene pool and much greater numbers.  With their CAB program and other marketing they have found ways to effectively utilize and market cattle of many diverse types and traits.  What for me would be important...

    ? for the Shorthorn Experts.

Interesting discussion but we seem to be missing a major point.  Since the 70's the market has been paying a premium for leaner cattle that fed to an acceptable grade standard, which for most meant a YG2, Low Choice target.  This is where Shorthorns have historically excelled, producing...

Opinions on Bulls to use on Shorthorn heifers

How are your Leader calves doing?  We sold a really good son to Steve McGill and have a couple of heifers kept back that look good.  I noticed that Waukaru had 2 sons in their bull sale that really good weaning performance.  Hope your calves are doing as well.

    Fall calf pics - UPDATE

Glad to hear the calves are doing well.  As we get more data on Leader I think we'll see that he has some value to the breed.  The bull that Steve bought has been a favorite around the farm for some time and I think he'll do a great job for the McGill's.

    Fall calf pics - UPDATE

Thanks to Steve McGill, Iva, SC, for his purchase of Hillside Vol.  Sired by Hillside Leader and out of a Muridale Buster daughter, Vol is extremely sound, moderate framed, athletic, with true muscle shape.  He should prove to be a great asset for the practical, performance based program that...

    Fall calf pics - UPDATE

I'll try to the next time I'm at dad's.  She doesn't look anything like him and is very different than the other Buster daughters we have.  She's very angular and feminine, a little larger framed and not as deep or soggy.  But she calves easily, has a great udder and takes good care of her...

    Fall calf pics - UPDATE

Gary, We try to creep all our calves for 30 days prior to weaning to help them acclimate better.  We use a 12% pellet that seems to work really well and the calves don't stress nearly as bad.  Joe No, I meant was he creepfed during the entire 205-day nursing period. Preweaning Regimens that...
