    Upcoming online sale on SmartAuctions

I live not far from Hill Haven and have been fortunate enough to observe the Firestorm story unfold.  First time I saw him was as a yearling.  My comment then was "best Shorthorn bull I've seen".  After seeing his mother and a pile of offspring, my opinion has not changed.  Show cattle?  Sure...

    SAV Angus Valley

Does anybody have any experience with this bull?  Want to breed a bunch of Angus and Angus X Simmental heifers and don't want throw away calves.  Looking for heifer calves that will make cows and marketable steer calves.  Don't want or need over-the-top calving ease, just want to avoid wrecks.

    Sun Country

Salesman?  Nope, just a full-time cowman/feedlot operator that has had the pleasure of knowing Mr. Alexander for 30+ years.  You?

Xbar, maybe I missed it, but what did your bull sale average?

    Hill Haven Fire Storm 28C

I saw that bull at Hill Haven in Sept.  I thought he was the most complete, useful Shorthorn bull I'd seen in a long time.  I've been critical of some modern Shorthorn cattle being very far removed from the commercial world, but this bull is what I, as a commercial cowman want. I'd agree with...

Can we design cows that are too low to the ground?

Nature doesn't care much for extremes.  Extremely tall, short, or deep.  The showring, on the other hand, only rewards extremes.  Hmm, could there be a co-relation here somewhere?  I think the other part of the puzzle is that those commercial cows that Grant is talking about are usually...

    James Hayes

Received word today that James Hayes of Cookstown, Ontario died on Sunday on his way back from a show in Quebec at age 58.  James was widely known in eastern Canada through his involvement in the showring with Northern Fitting Service.

    EXT

Hate to spoil the party, but the EXT calves I had several years ago were horriable.  Small, frail and lacking muscle.  Had snake-like temperaments to boot.  Only had a few, maybe about 5 or so, and they were all bull calves out of pretty good PB Angus cows.  Sold the rest of my semen.  Paid...

    A Caring Reminder......Local Man Killed....

Real good reminder.  Had a neighbor killed last Sept. by a stocker heifer.  This man ran in the neighborhood of 30000 head.  Had another neighbor hospitalized this week when a finished heifer kicked him "south of the border."  For every person who gets killed working cattle, there are many more...

What is the best Canadian shorthorn bull?

One of the best, and a bull that appears in many Canadian pedigrees is Manitoba Sunrise.  Was popular in the early to mid 80's.  Made real good, extreme ribbed, useful cows.  Saw a bunch at Scotsdale years ago and went home and ordered semen.  Had to protect him on udders somewhat but I can't...

What is the best Canadian shorthorn bull?

I would nominate JT Titan 3T for the most underated Canadian Shorthorn bull of all time.

    New Brahman Bull

Hey, do whatever floats your boat.  I even kinda agree with you on the showing bulls thing.  And I guess that if you are the only guy that comes into contact with that bull its just you that is taking your chances.  Sure hope that there are no unsuspecting kids around for the bull to play...

    New Brahman Bull

Buddy, there is no real way to skirt around this.  You are out of your mind to play with any bull like that.  More so called "quiet" bulls kill people than the ones that everybody knows are bad.  Not cool in my book at all.

    Ground hogs

Tasty little devils.  Had one in the freezer that we cooked to celebrate Groundhog Day.  Wife would have nothing to do with it.  Says that we (I) have sunk to new lows eating rodents.  Actually taste pretty good -alot like rabbit.  They eat nothing but the best forages.

    Brahman heifer

You would have to drive 20 hrs south of me to see any Brahma cattle, so I'm certainly no expert, but I sure like this calf.  When I look at the width of her muzzle, I am pretty sure that you've got a good one here!

    The Last Straw

J&H Mike's Cujo Broome Quality Manitoba Sunrise Red Rose Ruffian RB Eagle 157th All decent bulls, but probably won't get used here as not breeding much Shorthorn.

    50th Anniversary ideas?

We held a 45th anniversary for my parents 2 years ago because we were sure that my mom who has severe health issues wouldn't be able to enjoy a 50th.  My dad isn't much for formality or ceremony.  We organized a pig roast/threshing party on the farm.  We dug out dad's old threshing machine...

    Thoughts on our new heifer

I like this heifer.  I would think that she'll do alright in the local shows, but will come into her own as a cow.  Structurally pretty good with lots of power through her front end.  Would like to see her a tick deeper in her flank.  All and all a real good, useful kind of heifer.

    Rito Legacy

I used Sinclair Rito Legacy 3R9 last year on  3 cows.  I have 2 bull calves and 1 heifer calf.  The heifer calf is average, not exceptional, but will be a keeper and might even surprise me as I'm liking her more all the time.  The bull calves are really good.  One of them is always picked out by...

    The heifer from h$ll

A friend of mine has a PB Angus Jan. heifer calf at my place that we have been working on.  She was started in June by dragging a halter around the pen and tying her up for a couple of hours every day.  She ty broke well, but as soon as you go to untie her, she trys to nail you with her head...
