    Top 10 Shorthorn Cow Families

:) Yes, I think you are correct.  She's Gussie May out of Ellie May, if memory serves.  I'd have to check the papers but she's a "May".  Or possibly "Mae".  I knew her pedigree was pretty good, but it's nice to hear about such things from folks that know much more than we do.

    Top 10 Shorthorn Cow Families

This is a great thread.  I have a question - we have a heifer whose dam side is out of the Stout herd in OK.  Her sire  is Augusta Pride x Duchess. Is the lineage more desirable coming from the dam side?  Earlier in the post there was discussion about great sires vs. cow families.  She is a...

    How long?

Yep much better way of putting it.

    How long?

Our experience is it can be over a week.  I think they can actually go a couple of weeks. Watch for her ligaments to relax. Good indicator. Good luck!

    Calves forever homes

We have one that has a free pass. First show heifer my son had, is a great cow and a really good herd boss and babysitter.  Also tame as can be of course. She has quite the personality. :)

    who to use

She clicked well with a roan shorthorn last year - first timer couldn't get her Ai'd so we went with natural service.  Nice little black shorthorn cross steer. Hoping we can get her to settle AI this year.  We're gonna settle down and pick her one probably one mentioned above.

    who to use

Thanks I'll take a look at him.  Looked at Simple Math and gotta say I liked what I saw, especially with the Meyer shot in there. Will check Maverick as well, got a couple weeks to get a decision made.  Love pickin the bulls!

    who to use

Thanks I'll check him out.  She'll be a good steer maker just can't get away from wanting good heifers. Maybe just oughta bite the bullet and go for one that'll make  good steer.

    who to use

Okay I'll join in the "what bull to use".  We have a chimaine/angus, she'll be 2nd calver.  Pretty much a big ol 1400 lb girl. Got a table for a top, and great length.  Could use a bit more rib volume and better lower quarter. Her front isn't bad, but could stand to not be quite so heavy. We had...

    papers on cattle purchased

Sounds like a problem we had two or three years ago on a maintainer heifer. Bought her at auction and 4 moonths later no papers after repeated calls. Had to contact the association, etc.  Finally got papers on her after 6 months. Hang in there and be persistent.

    From bad to worse

Thanks DL, it seems he has.  Not completely well yet but on his way. I appreciate you taking the time to research and point out things we need to know. Believe me I know we will never be experts but if we're going to raise a few calves we better know all we can.  You make a lot of sense and back...

    From bad to worse

Isn't it great that there is a forum for this kind of discussion?  I love it.  An update - I think we've turned a corner. No evidence of scours today, butt is cleaner, and he's sucking down water and hay and momma"s bag is nearly empty so he evidently is feeling better. He's nursed well all...

    From bad to worse

I really am trying to be politically correct on here because I really don't want to sound critical of the vet, but the way I look at it I should have enough confidence that I wouldn't be worried that we're not doing the right thing. Don't want to step on toes and all that, because I really have...

    From bad to worse

Sounds like I'll have to question the vet  a little closer about meds.  My bigger problem is he's the only bovine vet within at least 75 miles probably more. And the next closest one  I know of I know I don't want treating my cattle. Gggrr.  No, the vet hasn't actually seen him. He was at...
