    Help - steer "passing out"

Hubby tied him up this morning and thinks he's doing it on purpose.  So not sure.

    Help - steer "passing out"

Okay, admittedly, this is our second year of steers so we don't know enough.  We brought the steer home last weekend and have been working on getting him use to being tied up.  So this past week he has been tied up just enough so he learns to not resist it.  But yesterday we decided to start...

Steer #1 is now at our house

We got our first steer for 2011 fair this weekend and he's now home.  Have to say I'm very impressed with this boy already.  Put the halter on him in the squeeze shut yesterday morning, then spent about 8 hours in the horse trailer gonig home.  Got home and we lead / herded him into the stall. ...

Well for better or worse the calves have been picked for this coming year

That's exactly what we are thinking.  He was ready to not do one at all again last year fair.  Hard when your 9 year old tells you his favorite thing about fair was that at least he didn't get killed.  And that stupid steer had his number.  So even though we don't want to offend his grandpa by...

Well for better or worse the calves have been picked for this coming year

Our county fair is definately a black steer show.  I think there were 2 non black animals there last year.  And mainly angus.  Well, looks like we are going to have a red angus - but really really nice  - and a hereford.  The hereford breeder almost tried to talk us out of it because he won't...

    DSLR cameras and lens options

I have a Canon 100-400 L lense.  I'm not super photographer - but this is my absolute favorite lens though it weighs a ton.  For Canon - the L lenses are their pro lenses and are a cream colored instead of black.  And this is a major zoom lens so unless I'm in close quarters I can take really...

Need helping getting a second steer in Colorado

Thanks for all of the replies.  Finding out my budget is way too low.  So we may just have to make do with the free steer and pick up just a feeder calf at the sale for the companion.  Somehow I was thinking $500-$750 would be enough for a fall calf but I see it's closer to $1000-$1500.  He's a...

Need helping getting a second steer in Colorado

Where is a good place to pick up a nice but not super expensive steer in Colorado?  We get one from my dad every year and they have been nice, but we only get one and have to get a second one also for company.  We have been thinking about talking with a local hereford breeder, but this is...

    DSLR cameras and lens options

I prefer the Canons myself.  Not sure what the T2i is going for, but you can get a Canon 40D or 50D for under $1000.  Even the Rebel XTis and such are great cameras. As for glass, this is where you should spend your money.  The Tamron lenses are okay, but the couple I have don't take nearly as...

    Show Number Harness

Are these really required to show?  So far we have just pinned the number on the boys back.  But that's because my background is horse shows and that's what we have always done there.  I know they aren't that expensive - just wondering if it's really that big of a deal.

Recommendations on Clipper Blades or possibly clippers

Okay, I'm trying to keep costs under control but still do a better job this coming year on the boy's 4-H steer than we did last year.  We went ahead and invested in a nice blower, but I really don't have the money for brand new clippers.  We currently have a set of the Wahl Iron Horse Horse...

    Trouble Keeping Manure Solid-Activated Charcoal

We are new to all this, so take it for what it's worth.  We fed a scoop of Optizyme every day to our steer last year.  It's a daily probiotic.  It's in the horse supplement section but says you can feed it to cattle.  When we would ran out and didn't feed him it for about 2 weeks - by the end of...

    i miss my market steer!!!!!!!!!

I was never allowed to do a steer growing up.  Mom said it was too hard when she did them and didn't want us to do them or go through that.  But my son did his first one this year and my 6 year old daughter can't wait.  And there were no tears this year for our steer.  But part of that I think...

    steer weight

Probably not the type of show you are asking about, but our county fair has an upper limit of 1450 with a lower limit of 1050.  I did hear one of the leaders saying he's trying to talk them into 1000 lower and no upper.  Who knows.

    Buying a Blower

Okay, we got by borrowing at fair, but I now understand you really need a blower all year to get that hair to grow.  So..... Where is the best place to buy?  Best time?  Best type?  I'm going to have to save pennies a few months to get enough saved, but I want to start now planning and research...

    Hereford Steers

We will be getting one angus cross steer again from my dad but we learned our lesson this year with only having one.  The problem with my dad's steers is both ofhis bulls are fairly mean though nice bulls.  Dad doesn't necessarily raise club calves, but actually raised the grand champion steer...
