    Lowlines on clubby heifers

Had a guy recommend it to us several years ago.  Same thing - you get a simple birth, black calf and marketable product.

Bacteria in silage and newborn calf death

I appreicate the great - and intelligent - responses.  If something odd comes out of the ending diagnosis, I'll let everyone know.  Thanks again.

Bacteria in silage and newborn calf death

I got more information talking with the folks tonight.  They have lost 8 out of 8 calves. The calves were all born dead except 1 which lived only a short time.  They took the blood test from that calf.  So, it's happening in utero (spelling?) but that may not change what you all are telling me. ...

Bacteria in silage and newborn calf death

We've got friends who have just a few bred cows and and they have lost 7 out of 7 calves within a few days of birth.  The vet is saying there is a bacteria in the bloodstream and a bacteria in the feed.  They have been feeding a chopped silage type feed that was grown locally.  My husband and I...

    foot rot

What is Haemophlius? Another reason for treating with new and stronger antibiotics is that not everyone has their cattle in a pen next to the house.  In our situation we do not have the time to corral cattle repeatedly to treat a case of foot rot.  Got other fires to put out so a 1 shot deal...

    Unions

I refuse to to the bait Knabe. But, if you have some facts on the percentages, perhaps you could provide your sources?  Or, is your fact gathering talent off to a slow start in 2013?  Oh yes, it is a lost art.  Everyone generally agrees that Unions support democratic candidates.  There is...

    Arizona Nationals

I don't know about the grand, but the reserve kid's name is Drager and I believe his daddy (or uncle) knows a little about showing and fitting.  I guess in that case he's not a paid fitter unless his kid (or nephew) is having to shell out some cash for pops.

    Unions

With the Citizens United decison, you would be hard pressed to find out who gave money to any party - Republican, Democrat, Green, Independent, blah, blah, blah.  I will say that you can look at the financial "situations" of individuals like Roger Ailes, Richard DeVos and the Koch brothers to...

    foot rot

Black Diamond, maybe you're talking about something different.  Foot rot, as I know it,  is an infection in the foot and possibly the lower leg.  Like any infection, it can kill an animal if left untreated.  I don't have any idea how you would "cut away" the infected part since you would be...

Three Thing to Ponder, Cows, The Constitution, The Ten Commandments

]Going throught some posts looking for the evening chuckle when I come across this:[/[/color]font] Who are you that he would have to justify what he said to YOU? Are you the new steer planet moral compass?  The idiot would be an apologist for the illegals like you are. That's who the real idiot...

    Cordless clippers?

We bought a pair of Andis back when the kid was showing pigs.  They worked great for pigs but clipping a calf takes a lot more time and the battery would never last that long.

    Show steer numbers (poll)

This is a timely topic since we discussed this at our last fair board meeting.  We live in a county where the livestock sale is supported quite well.  We sell somewhere around 130 total animals.  We sell 25 steers, and something like 40 head of pigs, 40 lambs and 15 goats.  We also sell the...

    Something Positve!

Great question. Perseverance.  Its one of the things we probably all have, but showing livestock for several years will sure help you build it.  Kind of like a muscle I guess.  Of course anyone who farms or ranches for a living knows it all too well.

    starting an operation...

If you really want to pursue this, do it now.  Don't wait because time does fly.  Start small but always look at opportunities that present themselves.  Jump on some of them.  I would not recomend waiting for any length of time if you are looking at buying land.  Farm land costs will not be...
