Had the opportunity to listen to a brief, but informative, presentation at the local Cattlemen's banquet a couple weeks ago. The Humane Society of the United States (no, not the one that helps all the puppies and kitties find good homes) is looking towards Ohio as one of the next states to be targeted for legislation banning confinement among other things in animal agriculture. Very similiar to Prop. 2 in California. I encourage eveyone on here to go the their web site and check it out. www.hsus.org. Much like PETA, they have a way for wording their thoughts and expressing their ideas, so that the "agriculturally ignorant" population will side with them and vote for such legislation. It appears as if their will never be a true end to these types of groups, leaving producers in a sticky situation. Who honestly wants, or has the funds, to totally "start over" and revamp facilities to meet new requirements, and even if they did...would they continue to be as efficient in production? This is no new issue, however it is becoming more prevalent. We, as producers, need to stand strong in the organizations we are a part of. I encourage everyone who is not involved with an organization, such as a local, state or national cattlemen's group, to get involved with one and encourage all mothers to do the same.
Thought this might make for an interesting conversation starter.
