Had the opportunity to listen to a brief, but informative, presentation at the local Cattlemen's banquet a couple weeks ago. The Humane Society of the United States (no, not the one that helps all the puppies and kitties find good homes) is looking towards Ohio as one of the next states to be targeted for legislation banning confinement among other things in animal agriculture. Very similiar to Prop. 2 in California.  I encourage eveyone on here to go the their web site and check it out. www.hsus.org. Much like PETA, they have a way for wording their thoughts and expressing their ideas, so that the "agriculturally ignorant" population will side with them and vote for such legislation. It appears as if their will never be a true end to these types of groups, leaving producers in a sticky situation. Who honestly wants, or has the funds, to totally "start over" and revamp facilities to meet new requirements, and even if they did...would they continue to be as efficient in production? This is no new issue, however it is becoming more prevalent. We, as producers, need to stand strong in the organizations we are a part of. I encourage everyone who is not involved with an organization, such as a local, state or national cattlemen's group, to get involved with one and encourage all mothers to do the same.

Thought this might make for an interesting conversation starter. ;)

I heard a speaker speak to this very issue over the weekend, and it has tremendous potential to take the legs out from Ohio agriculture.  Ohio is in the top ten states in the country in producing eggs, pork and veal.  HSUS is coming after a big hitter now that they have established a base in AZ, CO, FL and CA.  It's going to be difficult but we have to try to defeat this thing, not once but twice.  If HSUS does not get a legislative action passed in 2009 or 2010, I can't remember which specific year, similar to what was passed in CO, then they will make it a ballot initiative for the following year, so that it goes to a vote to the masses.

Q is right on with this statement.  We do need to stand strong with our organizations, no matter what the affiliation.  Cattle, swine, sheep, goats, chickens, dairy could all be affected by something similar to CA's prop 2, and we need to keep it out of OH.  I will throw in an endorsement for the Ohio Farm Bureau, as they are already attempting to figure out the best way to combat the HSUS.  Also, I hope that there are well organized farm bureau, or farm bureau type organizations out there in all of the other states, b/c I guarantee that if HSUS can smell blood, they will strike quickly.    Good luck to us. ???

Sorry to have a defeatist attitude, but I don't know if we can beat the animal rights activists. They have more money to put it simply. Today's consumer is so clueless about where their food comes from, all they care about is that the steak on their plate had a happy life, and HSUS is more than happy to provide their definition of what a happy life is for animals in agriculture. They've done a wonderful job painting all of us involved in animal agriculture as money-grubbing, aholes who abuse our animals and go out of our way to make their lives miserable.

I'm just saying...

You are correct in your statements.  Organizations such as HSUS have large amounts of money.  And they aren't afraid to spend it either.  I just hope that we are able to make the people of our great state realize the price at which happiness will come to that steak for dinner, or the bacon and eggs for breakfast.

PETA ads show up in weird places like the recent ad where the two pigs are eating pork.

don't be defeatist.  one doesn't need to convert too many people to get in the majority and ignore the minority like the democrats are doing now.

the problem with the republicans is simply that they spend the same amount of money, just to a different constituency.  at some point, the public has to see that competitive spending (bribing) isn't working.

You dont need the money there is no way you can out spend HSUS there budget is over a $100 million and close to $150 millon I think cant find the figures right now just get out and tell your story Farmers are still considered one of the most honest people in the nation tell it to anyone that will listen just spread the word and work together We as Farmers have to get along dont let them drive the different commodity groups apart I live in a rural community (less than 2000 in the largest town in our county) and there are still people here that have no idea where there food comes form or how it is produced assume nothing. There are some great resources out there to help tell the story of agriculture

haven't you seen the docudrama where soybean sterilizes/reduces the sexdrive of the human population and they die off as a species and the HSUS/PETA reincarnates into apes who throw rocks at each other and the whole process starts over?

Hey Knabe,

I recieved my March 9 edition of Feedstuffs newspaper today.    Rod Smith has a column featured on the front page concerning the "Operation Prop 2 Follow-through Campaign"!!  Apparently the coalition( including FARM(Farm Animal Rights Movement), In Defense of Animals, the Animal  Protection & Rescue League, Mercy for Animals, and Vegan Outreach) is increasing their activity to promote a "Vegan lifestyle" for all Californians.  They have a lengthy list of atrocities agains animals and are actively seeking financial support for their effort and their new website "www.livevegan.org".  They are also supported by the Humane Society of America one of the major promoters of Prop 2.

It sounds like it may be against the law to eat meat in California prett soon if they get their way!!

Good Luck!!

i'm thinking that in 10 years there will be enough mexicans in california to vote out these idiots and perhaps put them in jail for just being stupid.

i think one should start a soybean rights group.

the best thing about liberals, is their general incapacity to reproduce themselves, hence the need to take over the schools.

break that cycle and liberalism will be dead.

And what Ohio rural Sheriff is going to enforce such laws?......  Not too many where there are cattle every quarter mile of back road traveled.

Rural Ohio is a bunch different (i.e., conservative) than just about any place on the left coast.
