    solid gold

Anybody have thoughts about Solid Gold on a good, ground sow Angus cow? I have a 6807 daughter with SAV on the bottom side that I would like to try this way.

    solid gold

I really like the Solid Gold calves. I think they are functional, good cattle. Has anyone used him on a good, belly dragger Angus cow? Would like to know thoughts here on what one might expect from this kind of mating.

    embryo transfer

No. The recip will provide life lessons to the calf, so if you have a goosier recip, sometimes the calf will be likewise. Otherwise, we had a recip that was an AM carrier that raised nice calves naturally. We have used her as a recip, and she brings in a nice one...until last year. Had a BC...

    HELP please.... steer not gaining

    1. Worm him. I would use a drench like valbazen. 2. He needs body, cover, and muscle. He should be at 1225, or so for your show. Start on stabilized rice bran, sure champ, and I would cut out the other supplement. 3. I would consider filler in a couple of weeks. 4. If this were my sons calf...

    HELP please.... steer not gaining

When is your show? What does he weigh now? Is he finished or still growing? We probably need to know this to give you advice. Here are some starters. 1) Wouldn't hurt to worm him again. Watch withdrawal times. 2) Bloating will slow them down. But, I was able to get calves that bloated to...

    Supplements to help weight gain

Calf looks like he has some good to him. He needs to be eating about 25 pounds a day of a finishing feed. I would look at what AAOK has posted on his ration. It will work for steers. Get some stabilized rice bran and start them on it, building up to about a pound per day after 10 days, or so. I...

    Shipping Container as Cool Room...Opinions?

A cool room needs to have a drain, a good ventilation system, and an emergency system if the power goes off, the room temp rises above a certain level, and/or the oxygen levels are off. The width (8') is a little tight, but would work. The door is a little tight, too. I would modify the size of...

Is this what a grand champion should look like

I like to put this into a money perspective. Dressed cattle were selling for a weighted average of $193/cwt today on the USDA report. http://www.ams.usda.gov/mnreports/am_ls830.txt If you simply sold it on the rail and hit no premiums or discounts, then you would have grossed $1,706.12. My...

    angus genetic defects

Some of the OCC lines have been carriers of double muscling. 6807, as I understand it, is clean of all known lethal genetic defects.

    Polymelia in Angus cattle

http://www.angus.org/Pub/DD/DD_Announcement08122013.pdf Here is the cliff notes version. BR New Design 036 got stung by this bug. He had several sons, but most notable were GAR Predestined, GAR New Design 5050, and Bon View New Design 1407. All three are carriers. I just flushed a really nice...

    requirements to be a reciep

The ET calf will get an EPD if the recip dam is registered, and if there is a contemporary group of ET calves from registered recips. Otherwise, the calf gets a pedigree estimated EPD. I think in a lot of instances the recip is better than the donor.

    Where to start? Marketable sires!?

I would use a black, purebred Simmental bull on them. But, for the first calf I would consider going Angus on them. I know it takes up time, but a cowherd is a lifelong proposition. I like Meyer 734 on Angus, but the cost is high. I would consider a bull like 3c Macho, then take those heifers...

    Pasture Pic

If I knew that she was good for 10-20 freezable eggs, I would go Meyer 734 on her. Take those heifers and breed them to a TH carrier once they are mature cows. She is a very nice female, and is pretty moderate for a maine. I have always thought that 734 x maine was as good, if not better, than...
