What are y'all paying for alfalfa right now

I just bought some great 2nd cutting beautiful alfalfa in round bales for $105/ton delivered to my place. Last year this stuff was a little less but I think a little lower quality as well. Anyone else have to buy hay out there and what does it cost you?

    protocol for inducing

Do you give 5cc Lutalyse and 25cc Dex at the same time to induce? Generally when would you expect them to start calving from that point?

    placenta previa?

Not sure if this is what we had last night but would love any advice on it. Cow calving last night, looked like afterbirth coming out and no feet. Get her in, expecting to have foot back, head back, something....but all was in position. Pulled the calf, but it was dead. Was wondering if the...

How much/often do you check your calving cows?

We keep our very close calving cows and heifers in a 2 acre paddock and check them about every 4 hours and occasionally at night if we think one is very close or a heifer is close. We are around to see almost all the calves born and sometimes intervene... I think just because we are watching so...

yearly poll...% bulls vs heifers in calf crop

I remember this was pretty interesting reading last year so will start it up for 2010. We have had 19 calves so far and only 5 of those are heifers! Frustrating! Most of these calves were AI and ET. Also we are seeing birthweights higher across the board, across all sires lines probably due...

    UPDATE on down heifer

The vet was out and examined her...he felt she had pregnancy toxemia. Prepped her for a c-section and pulled out a live 54 pound heifer calf. Calf is breathing on its own and alert, probably about 3 weeks early. Cow was stitched up and given an IV of Cal-Dex and hopefully will be doing better...

help with down heifer heavy bred

I have a tough situation here and not sure what to do. Had a 3 year old get stuck in the mud of a creek and was there for several hours before we found her. Got her out but she cannot get up. If we lift her with a hiplift and the tractor, she can stand and actually walked around.  (this happened...

    Who's got Wrestlers out there?

Just wondering how many wrestlers parents are out there? I have two boys and they both love wrestling. One is 6&Under 58 and the other is 8&Under 52. This is our 2nd year and it is really fun and wrestling is pretty big in Kansas I would say.  My oldest wants to try and qualify for state this...

who's showing at Denver and hating this weather??

I don't have an indoor washrack or a heated barn so I am hating this weather. Since Dec 6, we have only had 5 days above freezing. We leave Monday and have 4 head to get ready, I washed 2 when it was 22 degrees out on Monday.  Just wondering if anyone else is not ready because of this weather.

    bedding down bulls

For those of you where the temps get really cold, do you put bedding down for your bull calves to prevent frostbite on the testicles? Our young bulls are in a dry lot situation but have good wind protection but we don't use bedding but wondering if I need to. Haven't had a problem in the past...

bringing show calves in the barn

Was just wondering if it does more harm than good to bring cattle inside the barn in the this weather. Our show calves have been outside through the last 2 snowstorms and are in a pretty protected area, but laying down is either muddy and cold or frozen and cold. We thought about bringing them...

    have you ever done this?

Ok, so who has ever lanced an abscess and cut a little too deep or long?? I just did that. I thought to myself.....I think I just killed my cow!! She has a case of lumpy jaw. Vet was out about 3 weeks ago and gave her NaI in the vein and at that time the lump was very hard and in the lower jaw...

What do you think of her?

Hey everyone. We raise strictly purebred Braunvieh cattle so we don't deal with cllubby genetics (or hair..lol)  but would like to know what you think of this heifer we are selling at Denver in January. She is a purebred Braunvieh that just turned a year a few days ago. She is sired by the bull...

    weaned calves won't eat grain

Sorry if this is something that has been posted before but I couldn't find anything quickly when I searched. I weaned 2 heifers 5 days ago. They weigh about 475 each and were June calves. No creep feed before. They are in a pen together and started on grain and hay. The hay is the same as they...

    signs of hardware disease?

We have never had to treat one for hardware...what are the symptoms? Haven't been able to check the cows for a good week with all the rain and mud and yesterday noticed one cow had lost a lot of weight in a short amount of time. She is going on 11 years old but has been fine all summer. Looked...

    feeding field peas

Do any of you use field peas in your ration? If so, is there a limit on what percentage of the ration it can be? My cousin is growing them and wanted us to try them as literature says they are an excellent source of protein and great mixed in a ration. So, we gradually have switched our feeder...

    product to make hair "pop"

I need some advice from my fellow planteers....I have been using at home a concoction of zoom bloom/kleen sheen/infusium 23 and vinegar and I like the way the hair is training and it is shiny and conditioned. However, it is not good for clipping, the hair is too heavy and doesn't give that pop I...
