    Help with hair coat

Very cool.  Our local Walmart carries the calf manna - and cheaper than anywhere else in town.

    Help with hair coat

Thanks for all of the replies.  I will start him on some calf manna.  So if he doesn't grow hair, how big of a deal is it on a little local county fair?  Are the judges going to kill him for it?  He's only a junior and this is his second year with steers.  Last year he only took one and we...

    Help with hair coat

Okay, this year, the best steer we have is a limousin/angus cross.  Very much limousin.  We have been brushing and bathing him and trying to get some sort of a hair coat on him.  He's under shelter 24/7 but not in an air conditioned barn as we just don't have that option.  We have still be...

    For horse people EVH1 outbreak

It's spreading fast across the country.  Very scary stuff and not much you can do but wait and see.  Several of the big vets here aren't taking any horses except major emergencies.

    Trimming / Fitting for shows?????

Okay, i've tried searching here and must not be using the right key phrases.  This is only our second year with steers.  We went to a little clinic / help session before fair last year where they showed us how to trim up the steers for fair.  I figured I would remember.  But of course not.  Is...

    Black Hair Dye

Funny post - we were joking about dyeing our steers black this weekend.  We have 2 red steers in a very black county.  I'm guessing you all are talking about dyeing faded black calves.  But thanks for making me giggle today.

    Clinic in Colorado

Would be fun to come to the BeefBrawl.  But no way either boy will be ready.  They jsut aren't filling out yet.  But thanks for the info.

    Clinic in Colorado

WE are trying to learn more and just was wondering if anyone knew of any clinics coming up in Colorado - preferrably the Eastern slope.

    TO BODY CLIP OR NOT

So what is your hair growth "formula"?  We had horrible hair last year for my son's first year.  Need to try and do better this year.

Are we going to be able to keep this boy's weight down

WE got our 1 steer at Thanksgiving and he was about 825.  At weigh in this past weekend he was 999.  Fair is the first of August.  And the range is 1050 - 1400.  We are just now switching to the finisher feed - have been on the grower up until now, so everything until fair should be out instead...

    Clinics in your area!!!

If you do one in the Denver/Eastern Colorado area I would love to take my son.  Do you have a mailing list I can get on once you decide where you are going to do the clinics?

    Weight Range at your fairs

That's actually something I have been worried about. And thanks for all of the replies.  I very much agree these kids need to learn to produce a nice finished product - though I hate to see some of the junior first year kids get hurt by raising the lower limit.  And it didn't make sense to me...

    Weight Range at your fairs

Thanks for the replies.  Love hearing what other places have. And I can understand the unfinished business - our calf made weigh in last year barely but was unfinished.  But it was a our first year and my son was only 9. And him getting to sell was the only reason he is doing the project again...

    Weight Range at your fairs

This makes sense to me for the weight limit.  There is a physical reason and not someone setting some arbitrary number. I should clarify that they can show their steers regardless of weight.  It's just being able to sell at the auction.  And face it - that's really the end of the project for...

    Weight Range at your fairs

One more thing I wanted to ask, who sets your weights - Fair board or the 4-H extension office.  Here the extension office recommended the State Fair weights but fair board did their own thing. I re-read my post and sounds like I'm calling no fair.  Really my interest is in making fair be a...

    Weight Range at your fairs

We just got notice that our county RAISED the weight requirements for this coming year fair.  Instead of being 1050-1400 it's now 1100-1400.  To me this is just wrong.  Especially when Colorado State fair lower limit is only 1000lbs.  Last year was our first year and my son's steer did just...

How to get the steer on feed

Okay, our fainting steer is just a pill.  We were leading him around a little and he tried the same stuff.  So just taking everything slow. But we have had him for over a week now and we can't get him started on the calf starter.  He came straight from pasture and hay when we got him and he's...

can you give a steer to much probias and why?

Keep in mind this is only our second year of steers.  But I have always feed my horses Optizyme and last year we gave it to the steer also.  It's a daily probias and he did great.  When I would miss a few days, his cow pies would get very loose and runny.  But as long as he was on it, all was...

    Help - steer "passing out"

Thanks everyone - I feel better.  Was worried we had an unhealthy calf.
