    Feed ration too dry?

I don’t put any molasses in my show feed. I used to use liquafat, but I tweaked my ration because the fat was too expensive. Now I don’t add any liquids to the feed. If one of the steers balls at it being too dry, which they haven’t, I would just top dress with a little water or watered down...

Castrating a 12 month old bull calf for beef

Y’all are kidding yourselves. Bull meat cannot compare to steer meat, so long as the steer is finished. I had a virgin bull break his leg in the squeeze chute when we were doing a BSE on him. I ended up butchering him. He was fat and I put all the meat into hamburger. It was pretty much...

Castrating a 12 month old bull calf for beef

Bull meat is pretty terrible. That being said, yours is still salvageable. Being a yearling, I’d band him. Knife cutting him will be very hard on him, maybe fatal. Even banding him, I’d look and see where the moon sign is in the zodiac. You want it as far away from the groin area as possible and...

    New Brangus program?

Not really a new program. They started an Ultrablack registry a few years ago. UB1 is a first generation cross between a registered Brangus and a registered Angus. UB2 is a second generation cross between a registered Brangus ands a registered UB1. If you cross the UB2 with a registered Brangus...

    Sullivan's Artic Chill misting ring

I agree with GoWyo. I wouldn't run misters in a cooler.

    Sullivan's Artic Chill misting ring

You're better off going to a tractor supply or sprayer supply store(Wylie here in Texas) and buying rubber hose and ultra fine sprayer tips. I did this last summer and built a whole barn misting system. I have 10 fans and 10 misters in my barn, and after running them all day, there isn't...

Cow not feeling well 2 weeks after delivery

It could be a lot of things. How big was the bull calf she had?  It's possible she had twins and one died and is still inside of her. She could also have a partially retained placenta. And it's also possible she is just sick. Bring her in and temp her. Then put on a glove and check out what's...

    Feeding Plan (Easy Gainer)

If it were me, I'd put him on the developer ration you mentioned. You'll have to play with the amounts to see how he does on them, but I'm guessing he will need around 16 to 18 pounds a day if he's an easy feeder.  He looks to be a big framed calf and will probably finish out at 1400 plus. I am...

    Ft Worth steer show

I'm not sure that Ft Worth live streams the show. Have someone sit at the exit gate of the show ring and live Facebook it. Plenty of good cattle in that spot.  ;D

    Ft Worth steer show

We showed there yesterday. It is sickening. This guy has a two year contract to judge. I will not subject my kids to him next year. We may skip Ft. Worth next year and head to Denver. It's that bad. Last night, during the light weight exotics, people were actually booing the judge from the...

Stock trailer width & floating center gate

I'm not a fan of the floating gates in trailers that will be used to haul commercial cattle. If all you're going to hail is show cattle, then they are great to be able to configure your tack area to be the size you need it. As far as width, I just purchased a used trailer 8 1/2 feet wide and I...

    Graft/Bottle Calves

Around here, those calves are worth 300-500 depending on type and kind.

    Calf Starter Ration

I bring the cow and calf up and start feeding the cow. Momma will teach the baby to eat. Once the baby starts eating, I will separate them during the day and feed the calf. At night I put the pair back together and feed the cow. Baby eats during the day, in the evening with the cow and gets all...

    Titanium 5 vaccine

We used to use titanium 5 on the calves. It never failed that 2 weeks after we vaccinated, they would start getting sick. I don't mean maybe he's sick maybe he's not. I mean fine today half dead tomorrow sick. We moved away from titanium and went to bovishield gold. We still get sick calves...

    Automatic waterers

In our showbarn, our pens are sized to hold one to two calves. We are looking to add automatic waterers, but aren't sure which ones to get. We don't need anything fancy and definitely don't need them heated. Does anyone use the bowl type waterers? How about the ones where the cattle have to push...

Slick cattle and haired cattle pix

Smoke steer got sifted in Ft Worth because the weight break wasn't kind to us. The class I was trying to avoid broke lighter than it did in the past ten years. He was in a class with steers that out weighed him by 150 pounds.

Here is our calf that got sifted at Ft Worth. He then went on to place 2nd in the heavy weight Chianina class at Houston.

    Question about Feeding Show heifers

I use a ration very similar to AAOKs ration. For steers I feed at 2-3% of their body weight depending on my goals. For heifers, I will feed them 1.5% of their body weight. All my cattle on this ration get free choice hay.
